More space. More flexibility. More consideration. These have been some of the key themes over the past few days as Liebherr presents a range of refrigeration and freezing innovations at IFA 2026 under the headline "Extend What Matters". With the launch of new XL and XXL models and the market-ready BluRoX technology, which replaces traditional freezer insulation with volcanic stone, the German manufacturer is introducing some of its most significant refrigeration and freezing innovations in recent years. The focus is on the needs shaping modern homes: more storage space, longer-lasting freshness, lower energy consumption and products designed to last for many years.
XL and XXL Models: When Life Grows, Your Refrigerator Should Keep Up
For Liebherr, innovation is not about adding more features for the sake of it. Instead, development is driven by everyday life and the challenges people face when it comes to food storage, food waste, energy consumption and kitchen design.
That is why this year's most important launches are not simply new models, but new ways of thinking about refrigeration and freezing. Families are buying groceries in larger quantities. Interest in food is growing. And many people prefer gathering family and friends around home-cooked meals rather than quick solutions. This places new demands on the kitchen.
"For more than 75 years, Liebherr has been working to improve the way we store food. With the new XL and XXL solutions and BluRoX, we are taking another step forward. The goal is simple: to give consumers more space, better freshness and products designed to last longer, both when it comes to food and the appliance itself," says Lars Stougaard Olesen, Sales & Product Manager MDA at Witt Denmark A/S.
With the new XL and XXL models, Liebherr has therefore created a range of integrated refrigeration and freezing solutions that provide significantly more space without compromising on design, energy efficiency or kitchen integration. The new appliances introduce a niche height of 194 cm, opening up entirely new possibilities in kitchen design. The XL models provide additional storage capacity through increased height, while the XXL models increase both height and width, offering substantially more room for food, beverages and the daily needs of the household.
More Space Without a Larger Footprint in the Kitchen
One of the greatest strengths of the XXL range is its extra-wide interior design. Users benefit from increased volume and better visibility without compromising the elegant integrated solution. The XXL fridge-freezer offers more than 100 litres of additional capacity compared to traditional solutions. This corresponds roughly to the extra refrigeration capacity typically needed by a two-person household. The model is equipped with multiple BioFresh drawers, providing optimal storage conditions for fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products.
BioFresh technology ensures temperatures close to 0°C and controlled humidity levels. This creates optimal storage conditions for sensitive foods, allowing many products to stay fresh for up to five times longer. This means less food waste, fewer grocery trips and greater flexibility to shop in larger quantities when it suits the family best. At the same time, the extra-wide interior provides larger shelves, more spacious door storage and improved organisation for everything from everyday groceries to larger purchases for guests or holiday celebrations.
Design That Creates Calm
Although capacity has been significantly increased, Liebherr has focused on ensuring the products continue to blend naturally into modern kitchens. The new XL models have been developed around the idea that a kitchen should not only function efficiently, but also contribute to a sense of calm and clarity in the home.
Inside, the models are equipped with LightTower illumination, which provides bright and even lighting throughout the refrigerator, making it easier to maintain an overview of the contents, even when fully stocked. The wide BioFresh zones and flexible storage solutions also make organisation simpler.
Features such as SoftSystem ensure that doors close gently and quietly. This reduces noise and supports the overall experience of quality and well-thought-out functionality in everyday use.
BluRoX: The Freezing Technology of the Future Built on Volcanic Stone
Among the most notable innovations at IFA 2026 is undoubtedly BluRoX, which is finally coming to market after 10 years of development. BluRoX represents a major shift in the way freezers are insulated. While traditional freezers typically use foam insulation in relatively thick layers, BluRoX uses a high-tech material based on crushed volcanic stone.
The advantages are remarkable. The new material provides significantly better insulation while occupying far less space. As a result, Liebherr can create up to 30% more storage capacity within exactly the same external dimensions as previous freezer generations. Consumers therefore gain more storage space without needing additional room in the kitchen. At a time when living space is an increasingly valuable resource, this innovation offers very tangible benefits.
Greater Sustainability Through Better Design
However, BluRoX is not only about space. Liebherr has also incorporated circularity and longevity into the design. This means materials and components can more easily be repaired, reused or recycled rather than discarded.
The technology has been developed with a focus on both serviceability and recyclability. The electronics are grouped together at the base of the appliance, making components easier to replace during repairs and simpler to separate when the product eventually reaches the end of its life cycle.
At the same time, BluRoX will become the first freezer to receive Cradle to Cradle certification. Among other criteria, the certification evaluates how easily a product can be repaired, recycled and incorporated into new products once it has reached the end of its useful life. For consumers, this provides assurance that sustainability has been considered throughout the entire product life cycle.
In this way, Liebherr addresses two of the most important priorities in the white goods industry today: longer product lifespans and reduced resource consumption.
More Space for What Matters
With the new XL and XXL models and the groundbreaking BluRoX technology, Liebherr addresses some of the most relevant needs in modern homes: more space, less food waste and more energy-efficient solutions.
At IFA 2026, the company demonstrates how technological innovation can be translated into tangible everyday benefits. The result is refrigeration and freezing solutions that make it easier to store more, preserve freshness for longer and make better use of available space, without compromising on design, comfort or sustainability.
